Liposuction (Fat Suctioning) |
| |
|
Liposuction,
also known as suction lipectomy,
is a procedure designed to remove excess
accumulations of fatty
tissue from specific areas on the body. Liposuction is not designed for weight
loss, but it can sculpt and slim certain areas that are not responding to
exercise and diet. Liposuction performed by a top Bay Area cosmetic surgeon can boost the way you look and feel.

Consultation: |
During
your initial consultation you will discuss
with Dr. Zandi your past and
present medical conditions and current
medications. He needs to know if
you have hypertension, thyroid problems, diabetes,
or allergies to any medications.
He should also know about your past surgeries
and
personal habits, such as smoking and drinking.
It is of utmost importance to inform him
of any anemia or blood pressure problems,
or if you are taking any prescription
diet pills. A physical examination will
be performed and preoperative photographs
will be taken. You may be shown before
and after photographs. Lab tests, x-rays
or EKG may be ordered depending on your
general health. At the conclusion of the
consultation and physical examination,
fees will be discussed with you by the
doctor and his staff.
|
| Preparation: |
For best liposuction results, you
should try to come as close to your goal
weight as possible before surgery.
Stop all non-prescription medication, diet
pills, herbs, and garlic two weeks before
surgery. You will be
asked to start taking iron supplements
prior to surgery.
It is advisable to stop smoking two
weeks prior to and two weeks following
surgery. Do not drink any alcoholic
beverage two days prior to and one week
following surgery.
Avoid
taking aspirin
and aspirin
containing products such as Advil and
avoid garlic and garlic products two
weeks prior to surgery. These products
can prolong bleeding and increase bruising.
Tylenol may be taken during this period.
Starting two days before surgery, you
should wash your entire body from
neck to feet with Betadine soap for
15 minutes twice per day. An additional
wash should be done right before the
surgery. Skin
care products may be applied after each
washing except the last wash before
coming to the surgical suite.
Do not eat or drink anything after
midnight before surgery. You may,
however, take prescription medication
with a small amount of water and brush
your teeth in the morning before
surgery. Wear a loose fitting shirt and
pants to the surgical suite. Loose
sweats are recommended as you will be in
a compression garment after surgery and
clothing may be difficult to get on. Do
not wear jewelry or bring valuables.
Please plan to have someone bring you
to and take you home from surgery and
stay with you the first 24 hours. Notify
the office staff of this person's name
and telephone number prior to surgery.
Have all prescriptions filled a few
days before surgery so they will be
available when you arrive home
from surgery.

The
Procedure: |
Liposuction is usually performed under
general anesthesia and occasionally
under local anesthesia with conscious
sedation as an outpatient. Ultrasonic
liposuction equipment can allow the
surgeon to suction more fat in one session
with less trauma to the tissue. Ultrasonic
and traditional tumescent suctioning
techniques can be done on any combination
of areas, at your surgeon's discretion.
Some of the larger volume or multiple
area suctioning can be done in two separate
sessions. Fat is removed by inserting
small hollow tubes called cannula through
one or more small incisions in the area
to be suctioned. The cannula is attached
to a suction tube and liposuction is
performed after the area has been infiltrated
with a solution of saline and epinephrine
to reduce bruising and bleeding. After
surgery you are placed in a compression
garment which should be worn for up
to four weeks.
You may go back to work in one to two
weeks after surgery, depending on your
job. Exercise and weight training can
be resumed three to four weeks after
surgery. Walking begins a few days after
surgery and is increased as tolerated.

| Postoperative
Care: |
|
Rest
the night of surgery. Take pain medication
as needed, but be careful not to
overdose: too much can
cause nausea and vomiting. You are encouraged
to get up and move around on the day after
surgery to increase your circulation.
You will be given an appointment for your
first postoperative visit.
You
may experience moderate pain for the first
two to three days following surgery. Pain
medication is given to reduce discomfort
during your recovery period. A slight
fever is normal two to three days following
surgery.
You will have on a compression garment
with bandages underneath. Oozing and draining from the
surgical site is normal. If bandages get
bloody and soaked, they may be changed
and replaced with new sterile pads with
or without removing the garment. Draining
usually stops or is minimal on the third
day. You may remove the garment and rest
in bed while someone washes it for you
after a few days. You will need help to
get the garment back on. You will have
an appointment for suture removal within
five days.
You
are encouraged to call the office if you
have any questions.
