Liposuction

Dr. Zandi has a great deal of experience with cosmetic surgeries performed on Asians and has been performing them since 1974.
Ultrasonic Liposuction (Fat Suctioning)

Liposuction also known as suction lipectomy is designed to remove excess accumulation of fatty tissue from specific areas on the body. Liposuction can enhance your appearance and contour of the body. Liposuction is not designed for weight loss, however, it can help in certain areas that are not responding to exercise and diet giving a more desirable proportion.
Who is a Good Candidate?
If you have excess accumulation of fatty tissue on any of these areas:
Thighs, hips or buttocks.
Abdomen and waistline.
Cheeks, under chin or jowls
Knees, calves and ankles
Upper arms
Back and flanks
Private Consultation:
During your initial consultation you will discuss with your plastic surgeon your past and present medical conditions and current medications used. He needs to know if you have hypertension, thyroid problems or diabetes, allergies to any medications. He should also know about your past surgeries, personal habits, such as smoking and drinking. It is of utmost importance to inform him of any anemia or blood pressure problems, or if you are taking any prescription diet pills. A physical examination will be performed and preoperative photographs will be taken. You may be shown before and after photographs. Lab tests, x-rays or EKG may be ordered depending on your general health. At the conclusion of the consultation and physical examination, fees will be discussed with you by the doctor and his staff.
Preparation:

It is recommended that if you are dieting, try to lose as much weight to reach as close as possible to your goal weight for the best results of liposuction surgery. Stop all non-prescriptive medication, diet pills, herbs, and garlic two weeks before surgery. You will be asked to start taking iron supplements prior to surgery.

It is advisable to stop smoking two weeks prior to and two weeks following surgery. Do not drink any alcoholic beverage two days prior to and one week following surgery.

Avoid taking aspirin and aspirin containing products such as Advil and avoid garlic and garlic products two weeks prior to surgery. These products can prolong bleeding and increase bruising. Tylenol may be taken during this period.

For a period of two days before surgery you should wash your entire torso from neck to feet, with Betadine soap for 15 minutes twice per day. An additional wash should be done right before the surgery. No skin product should be used two days prior to the surgery. Skin care products may be applied after each washing except the last wash before coming to the surgical suite.

Do not eat or drink anything after midnight before surgery. You may, however, take prescriptive medication with a small amount of water and brush your teeth in the morning before surgery. Wear a loose fitting shirt and pants to the surgical suite. Loose sweats are recommended as you will be in a compression garment after surgery and they may be difficult to get on. Do not wear jewelry or bring valuables.

Please plan to have someone bring you to and take you home from surgery and stay with you the first 24 hours. Notify the office staff of this person's name and telephone number prior to surgery.

Have all prescriptions filled a few days before surgery, so they will be available for you when you arrive home from surgery.

The Procedure:

The operation is usually performed under general anesthesia and occasionally under local anesthesia with conscious sedation as an outpatient. Use of ultrasonic liposuction equipment can allow the surgeon to suction more fat in one session with less trauma to the tissue. Ultrasonic and traditional tumescent suctioning techniques can be done on any combination of areas, at your surgeon's discretion. Some of the larger volume or multiple area suctioning can be done in two separate sessions. Fat is removed by inserting small hollow tubes, called cannula through one or more small incisions in the area to be suctioned. The cannula is attached to a suction tube and liposuction is performed after the area has been infiltrated with a solution of saline and epinephrine to reduce bruising and bleeding. After surgery you are placed in a compression garment which should be worn for up to four weeks.

You may go back to work about one to two weeks after surgery, depending on your job. Exercise and weight training can be resumed three to four weeks after surgery. Walking begins a few days after surgery and increased as tolerated.

Postoperative Care:

Rest the night of surgery. Take pain medications as needed (too much pain medication can cause nausea and vomiting). You are encouraged to get up and move around on the day after surgery to increase your circulation. You will be given an appointment for your first postoperative visit.

You may experience moderate pain for the first two to three days following surgery. Pain medication is given to reduce the pain during your recovery period. A slight fever is normal two to three days following surgery.

You will have on a compression garment with bandages underneath. You may see a lot of oozing and draining from the surgical site, this is normal. If bandages get bloody and soaked, they may be changed and replaced with new sterile pads with or without removing the garment. Draining usually stops or is minimal on the third day. You may remove the garment and rest in bed while someone washes it for you after a few days. You will need help to get the garment back on. You will have an appointment for suture removal within five days.

You are encouraged to call the office if you have any questions.

Fees:

It is customary that the fees for surgery to be paid two weeks prior to surgery. This assures that the patient is sincere in his or her motivation. The fees include the surgeon's fee, the facility charge, which is private and fully accredited with high tech equipment, and anesthesiologist or certified nurse anesthetist, if general anesthesia is used. Also included in this fee is any laboratory tests performed in the office and use of special equipment such as ultrasonic suction device. It is very rare that insurance plans cover cosmetic surgery. Please feel free to ask the office staff if you have any questions in that regard.

We understand this is a very important decision in your life and you would like to do this for yourself. In your private consultation with Dr. Zandi, who is a Board Certified plastic surgeon, you may discuss your needs in detail and also obtain additional information.
