There is a great deal
of controversy about these two subjects
in cosmetic surgery, especially when
such images
are shown on websites.
In
my opinion, the purpose of showing photographs
to prospective patients is to increase their
knowledge of what to expect from their procedure. Before-and-after
photos of average results can help establish realistic expectations.
Unfortunately, in most instances, only
carefully selected photos of the best
results achieved are placed on the website.
This practice gives the patient unrealistic
expectations and often results in disappointment
following the operation.
The
use of computer imaging
is just as controversial. If used as a marketing
rather than an informational tool, computer imaging
can also lead to unrealistic
expectations and subsequent
disappointment. This is often the reason
why patients must sign a disclaimer that the
result of the procedure may be different
from what has been shown on the imaging
system.
A commitment to honesty is the basis of my
decision not to place before-and-after
photographs on my website and to not use
computer imaging. I try not to impress my patients with
promises of unrealistic results. Should
they desire to see before-and-after
photographs during their consultation at my
Bay Area cosmetic surgery center, I will show them the more
average and realistic ones and be
completely upfront in informing them of the facts.
